FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES AND SANITATION FLAG OFF WATER SUPPLY INTERVENTION PROJECTS IN SOKOTO STATE
The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has officially launched several Federal Government intervention projects aimed at improving water supply in Sokoto State. The flag-off ceremony took place at the Sokoto State Government House, presided over by the Honourable Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Barr. Muhammad Bello Goronyo, Esq on Wednesday 9th October, 2024.
These projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is focused on uplifting the lives of Nigerians by providing critical infrastructure. The interventions specifically target poverty alleviation through sustainable water supply solutions for rural communities and support for irrigation farming. This initiative is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which calls for clean water and sanitation for all.
In his address, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Bello Goronyo expressed profound gratitude to the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its unwavering commitment to improving water supply infrastructure across the nation. He highlighted the critical importance of sustainable water access for both domestic use and agriculture, particularly in rural areas. The Minister emphasized that these projects are part of a larger national effort to enhance water supply and irrigation in Sokoto State and include essential components related to road infrastructure and water resource management under the “Renewed Hope Agenda”
The Minister of State also extended his gratitude to the Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, Ph.D., for his relentless support of these initiatives. He acknowledged the Governor’s dedication to improving water access in the state and emphasized the strong partnership between the state and federal governments in addressing the water needs of the people. Additionally, he expressed his appreciation to Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the Sarkin Yamman Sokoto, for his leadership and the pivotal role he has played in fostering these developmental projects within Sokoto’s water sector.
Hon. Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, Special Adviser to the President on Community Engagement, praised the Honourable Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Bello Goronyo, for his dynamic leadership and proactive approach in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda within the water sector. He commended the Minister for initiating these projects, which focus on improving rural water supply, irrigation farming, and rehabilitating critical road infrastructure in Sokoto’s rural communities. These efforts, he noted, will have a far-reaching impact on improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable development.
The Honourable Commissioner of Water Resources in Sokoto State, Hon. Yusuf Maccido, added that the collaboration between the Federal Government and Sokoto State aims to ensure sustainable water supply for all residents. He emphasized the urgency of completing these projects by the end of 2027, underscoring the state’s commitment to meeting the water needs of its population.
During the event, the Honourable Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation signed contract documents for the establishment of approximately 40 boreholes across various local government areas in Sokoto State. These boreholes, previously approved by the Federal Government, are part of a broader initiative to provide clean and sustainable water solutions to underserved communities, with the ultimate goal of improving public health and boosting agricultural productivity in the region.
